Swedish design has long been renowned for its purity and simplicity. Cool, restrained, functional and beautiful, these are the type of adjectives normally applied. On one level this is true, but it does not tell the whole story. Yes, there is Beauty in abundance, but lurking beneath the surface is Beauty's alter ego, the Beast.
*
Challenging the notion that Swedish design has a single, unified character, Beauty and the Beast explores the growing duality of contemporary Swedish design. Exposing two contrasting sides of the Swedish design psyche, the exhibition reveals the dark undercurrents beneath the prevailing image of purity and restraint. If Beauty symbolises heaven and the aspiration towards spiritual purity, the Beast represents the confused, shadowy world of the underworld.
*
The exhibition is in two halves. The first gallery evokes heaven. Here you are brought face to face with Beauty in her purest and most seductive form. The second gallery transports you down into the underworld, where you will be confronted by the Beast in a variety of colourful and theatrical guises. Leaving the exhibition, you will pass through heaven again, perceiving Beauty with different eyes.
